Under the Tunisian Moon - Chapter 5

Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4

A/N: First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for your wonderful comments and gif responses and continued support, in light of me sort of neglecting my other fics for this one. I think I have a couple (maybe three) more chapters in me for this one.

I also have feelings about this story that I’ve been wondering if I should talk about. (Some of them prompted by thisissomefreshbullshit's comments on chapter 4.) It has occurred to me from the beginning, but more and more as I get into this fic, that it's not just the place that makes things a (little bit) easier for Rae and Finn. They’ve each had time. Almost a whole extra year, which, in their young lives, is not insubstantial.

Finn has gone to Leeds for reasons other than Rae. Rae has had a year of therapy and had a relationship with Liam that ran its course, leaving her with maybe a few more metaphorical scars, but also wiser. (Not wise, just wisER.)

I was struggling internally with this chapter for a couple of days, but I’m going to post it. You guys can let me know what you think! :)

OH. AND. WARNING: This chapter contains a quantity of smut. Smut with substance, but smut is smut.

After they shared a lingering goodnight kiss, Rae grabbed her shoes and headed back inside. Both her head and her heart were full, and she couldn’t account for how she was feeling. Obviously, she was happy. She was over the fucking moon. But this happiness had an expiration date. He would leave in a few days, and even if he came back to Stamford to visit his dad, it didn’t mean she’d see him again. They’d grown up in the same place for seventeen years and hadn’t managed to properly meet, why assume that he’d want to see her again after he left?

Rae ambled along, unaware of her surroundings, until she was at the end of the hall outside her room. She pulled out her room key and just as she opened the door, she heard a hissing at the other end of the hall.

“Psssst! Rae!” Pamela was shout-whispering her name and waving at her.

Rae tossed her Converse into her room and padded back towards the dining room.

“What?” she asked, in hushed tones.

“What d’ya mean, ‘what’? Spill. I told ya I wanted details.”

“Can’t it wait?” Rae glanced in the doorway and only saw one table occupied.

“This guy won’t leave; he’s been nursing one drink for an hour and a half. I keep droppin’ hints about how the kitchen is getting ready to close, but he won’t budge! So, dish.”

Rae’s been talking to someone on the internet every night for the best part of a year. Someone she feels comfortable to talk completely honestly with. So when they say they’re going away for a few weeks, Rae’s down, she’s gonna miss them. Who would she argue about Oasis with? Little does she know that Archie’s friend Finn who’s coming to visit isn’t the stranger he seems to be……….

What are the odds! Part one

Rae dumped her bag onto her bed and switched on the computer. Today had been a drag and she needed some serious cheering up, an there was only one person who could do that.

Private Allies, Pt. 3

A/N: I was going to post a longer part for this, but I realized that both parts 1 and 2 are about 3,500 words, and I want to keep them all the same, so here is a ~3,500 words long part 3! But the good thing is, I’m almost finished with part 4, and I’ll get a start on part 5 before I post it. Hey, look at me actually posting fic chapters! I hope you like it! And, as always, thanks to princefinnley for the prompt.

Tag list at the end, and please let me know if you want taken off/put on!

Part 1   Part 2

Saturday found Rae back on the same uncomfortable metal bleachers, ready to watch Stone Hill take on Austen Park again.

“Rae, if you complain this week as much as you did last week, I swear I’ll tape your mouth shut.”

Rae gave Chloe an unimpressed looked and a lazy eye roll.

“You don’t believe I’ll do it? I’ve got all sorts in here. I’m prepared.” Chloe patted her bag sitting next to her and Rae suppressed an amused smile.

“I’m not complaining. Have you heard me complain? I haven’t heard me complain.”

Chloe held her hands up in surrender and gave Rae a smile, and Rae let her own through, although she felt like smiling for reasons unbeknownst to Chloe.

Rae nervously gripped and released her knees as she leaned forward slightly to look over the crowd. Her eyes paid close attention to Austen Park’s side, and Finn’s unmistakable fringe and round sunglasses came into view just as his head turned in her direction. Rae quickly looked back at Chloe, who was engrossed in a conversation with a boy sitting next to her. She decided the coast was clear and chanced a knowing smile at Finn. Finn shifted his eyes around dramatically before cupping his lips and mouthing, “Four o’clock, yeah?”

Even from the distance, Rae could see his eyebrows disappear into his hair. She couldn’t help quietly laughing and nodding just enough for him to tell and mouthing back, “Dork.” Finn smiled and shrugged before turning back to face the field and pulling out a pack of cigarettes. Rae watched in awe as Finn causally placed the cigarette between his lips and set a lit match to the end. Finn tilted his head back slightly and exhaled a long line of smoke. Rae’s eyes devoured the sight of his pursed lips and the lean curve of his neck and she blinked rapidly, unable to believe one person could be that attractive. And that she would be spending the evening with that person. Alone. In his house. Her eyes were still fixed on Finn when Chloe bumped her shoulder.

“What ya starin’ at, babe?” Rae quickly moved her head away, but not fast enough to fool Chloe. Chloe’s eyes quickly found Finn and she nodded thoughtfully.

“He’s definitely fit, but he’s off limits, yeah?” She raised her eyebrows and Rae rolled her eyes, tired of this lecture.

“It’s like window shoppin’, Chlo. I can look at the pretty, shiny things in the window all I want, even if I can’t buy them.”

Chloe sighed wistfully. “Finn Nelson is defo a pretty, shiny thing. Oh, well. I hear he only dates blondes, anyway.”

Chloe smacked her gum to punctuate her point and Rae’s eyebrows knitted together in panic, just in time for her own raven hair to be blown into her vision by a gust of wind.

Confidence is the only key. I know a lot of people who aren’t traditionally ‘beautiful’ - not symmetrical or perfect-bodied or perfect-skinned. But none of that matters because all that shines through is their confidence, humor and comfort with themselves. I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.
